A Community Bicycle Township tour, allowing you genuine interaction with the local people of Masiphumelele informal settlement, to experience Xhosa culture and discover township life by bicycle. After being picked up from your hotel you will be transferred to the BEN workshop from where the tour starts. This is a non-profit organisation, which promotes the use of the bicycle in all its forms to enhance low-cost, non-motorised transport. The BEN bicycles are second hand 're-cycled' bicycles, fixed and repaired by locally trained mechanics and then sold at affordable rates to people in the community. A local guide will take you round the township visiting interesting places and explaining some local Xhosa customs. A highlight of the tour is a visit to a Sangoma (traditional healer) who performs interactive dancing and drumming. We also visit a pre-school where enthusiastic teachers work under difficult circumstances. Nomawethu, a local lady who hosts the tourists in her home, makes authentic African tea, before you are transferred back to your hotel.
