A Community Bicycle Township tour, allowing you genuine interaction with the local people of Masiphumelele informal settlement, to experience Xhosa culture and discover township life by bicycle. After being picked up from your hotel, you will be transferred to the BEN workshop, from where the tour starts.
This is a non-profit organisation that promotes the use of the bicycle in all its forms to enhance low-cost, non-motorised transport. The BEN bicycles are second-hand 'recycled' bicycles, fixed and repaired by locally trained mechanics and then sold at affordable rates to people in the community.
A local guide will take you around the township, visiting interesting places and explaining some local Xhosa customs. A highlight of the tour is a visit to a Sangoma (traditional healer) who performs interactive dancing and drumming.
We also visit a preschool where enthusiastic teachers work under difficult circumstances. Nomawethu, a local lady who hosts the tourists in her home, makes authentic African tea before you are transferred back to your hotel.
Includes: Return transportation, services of a township guide, visit to a Sangoma (traditional healer), visit to Peacock creche (only available during the week), visit to local crafters and artists, tea and vetkoek in an African home, and ride on an old, old-fashioned Dutch bicycle.
