A major attraction of the Aliwal Shoal is its diversity of marine life. The Shoal is host to a prolific amount of tropical reef fish and invertebrate life. “Big attractions” to the reef include dolphins, giant stingrays, eagle and manta rays, turtles, huge potato bass, and sharks.
With the Aliwal Shoal being situated so far offshore, the chance of seeing large schools of pelagic fish is good. From late May to August, humpback whales are regularly seen on the surface. During the late summer months (February to April), Whale Sharks can occasionally be seen.
From July to November, the Ragged Tooth (Grey Nurse) Shark congregates in large numbers during their annual migration up the eastern coastline of South Africa. During this time, it is almost guaranteed that divers will see Ragged Tooth Sharks on their dives, and it is not uncommon to see groups of 20 or more sharks at a time.
Although aggressive looking, this is, by nature, a docile shark and poses no threat to considerate divers. Other attractions of this area are two very popular shipwrecks, the "Produce" and "Nebo".
