Limpopo

Hoedspruit, South Africa

Hoedspruit (Afrikaans for Hat Creek) is a town situated at the foot of the Klein Drakensberg (Afrikaans for "Small Dragon Mountains" range), in the Limpopo province of South Africa, on the railway line from Tzaneen to Kaapmuiden.

Economy

The town, while still small, has grown in recent years. Due to its proximity to private game reserves and the Kruger National Park, eco-tourism is a major contributor to the local economy.

The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre engages in research and breeding of endangered species, notably cheetah, African wild dog and black-footed cat.

The Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre located in the Limpopo Province was established in 1991. A businessman from Pretoria, Mr Strijdom, owns the farm on which the centre is situated. The rehabilitation centre was established and is run by Brian Jones. Moholoholo is actively involved in ‘problem animal’ control on farms and in tribal areas. The animals are removed from the area where they are unwanted and relocated to an area where they are welcome. This is done at Moholoholo’s expense.

Air Force Base Hoedspruit is a significant contributor to the local economy. The civil Eastgate Airport, which shares the Air Force base's airfield is, as of February 2012, is served by South African Express, several charter operators as well as general aviation.
